At The Jacks Law Group, one of the most frequent—and understandable—questions we hear from our clients is: "How long will my claim take?" For years, navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) claims process has required an immense amount of patience. However, we recently received some fantastic news from the VA that we are thrilled to share with our clients and the Veteran community.
The VA has announced a dramatic reduction in processing times across the board—for disability claims, pensions, and survivor benefits. With a record number of claims being processed, Veterans and their families are finally receiving the benefits they've earned on a much more timely basis.
Here is a breakdown of the major improvements and what they mean for your pending or future claims:
1. Disability Claims Are Moving Faster Than Ever
If you are waiting on a disability claim, the timeline has significantly improved. According to the VA, the average number of days needed to complete a claim has dropped from 141.5 days down to 80.7 days—a massive 43% decrease. Even better, speed hasn't sacrificed quality. The VA reports that claims-processing accuracy has increased to 94.02%, the highest rate seen in the last two years.
2. The Backlog is Shrinking
A "backlogged" claim is generally one that is older than 125 days. For the first time since 2020, the overall backlog of Veterans waiting for VA benefits has fallen to fewer than 100,000 claims. The VA is on pace to process over 3 million claims this fiscal year alone.
3. Faster Relief for Pensions and Survivor Benefits
The VA also handles hundreds of thousands of claims for Veterans Pension, Survivors Pension, and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) each year. The processing times for these critical benefits have seen staggering improvements:
-
Veterans Pension Claims: The average completion time has plummeted from 170 days to just 57 days (a 66% reduction), and the backlog for these claims has been virtually eliminated (reduced by 98%).
-
Survivors Pension Claims: Processing time has dropped from 172 days to 73 days.
-
DIC Claims: DIC benefits—which serve surviving spouses, children, or parents of a service member who died in the line of duty or from a service-connected condition—have seen average completion times drop from 163 days to 73 days.
-
Burial Claims: The average time to complete a burial claim has been cut in half, dropping from 70 days to 31 days.
What This Means for You
The VA attributes these milestones to focused leadership, targeted overtime, and the hard work of their claims processors—about half of whom are Veterans themselves.
For our clients at The Jacks Law Group, this means that the light at the end of the tunnel is much closer. However, while the VA is working faster, accuracy on your end is still the key to success. Submitting a fully developed, accurate claim the first time—or aggressively managing your appeal—is the best way to take advantage of these faster processing speeds and avoid unnecessary roadblocks.
